AP 4 – 07: Role of the Teacher

PURPOSE

To ensure that teachers are familiar with and adhere to the requirements of the Education Act, Division and school policies and Administrative Procedures. Teachers are expected to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities and contribute to a student-centered environment.


SCOPE

This procedure applies to all teaching employees.

PROCEDURES

For the school and students, in accordance with law, Board policy, the collective agreements and administrative directives, the teacher is responsible to the Principal for:

  1. The achievement of the mission and educational goals established for the school and the Division. 
  2. The implementation of Board policies and administrative directives.
  3. The maintenance of professional relationships with Division and school staff, students, parents, school councils and other affiliated individuals, groups or organizations.
  4. The provision of competent instruction to students.
  5. The teaching of the course of studies and educational programs that are prescribed, approved or authorized pursuant to the Education Act.
  6. Develop long-range plans specifying course objectives, learning resources, time allotment and evaluation procedures.
  7. Engages in careful instructional planning on a daily basis to meet the needs of all students.
  8. The encouraging and fostering of student learning.
  9. The regular evaluation of student learning and periodic reporting on the results to students, parents and the Principal.
  10. The promotion of a safe, secure and caring learning environment for all students.
  11. The maintenance of order and discipline among students while they are in the school or on the school grounds or while attending or participating in activities sponsored by the Board.
  12. Other duties, responsibilities, and obligations as assigned by the Principal or the Board.
